No doubt, music in the sport of figure skating today is as important as a pair of well-fitting skates, if not more. There are numerous memorable figure skating programs by various competitors. Many of them define the love of this sport for athletes, coaches and audiences worldwide.
The beautiful imagery the choreographers created and the performers delivered, is timeless. Like, if we said “Scheherazade”, Meryl Davis and Charlie White’s excellent interpretation immediately comes to mind. In that free dance, their music was edited before the ice dance was choreographed.
Then music was then finessed so that elements could be flawlessly performed. “Hip Hawk”, also known as “Cyber Hawk”, is Daisuke Takahashi’s incomparable short program. He was chiseling the ice to the contemporary Swan Lake original music that was composed especially with specific timing structure of elements in the program.
What makes one music piece suitable for a figure skater’s program and another, so-so? Skaters and everyone who surrounds them on their climb up need to recognize the value of figure skating music.
Learning to select the most advantageous music piece is important – a knowledgeable music expert who understands the intricate demands of figure skating music should be the one who edits your music. It will be in the skater’s ears and head for months on end as they practice and eventually compete to it, and ideally, should still love it after their competitive performance.
