In the middle of 20th century, Italian musicologist Remo Giazotto claimed to have discovered a Tomaso Albinoni 18th century original manuscript score of a beautifully melodic composition. Giazotto published it, but never showed the Albinoni original to anyone, starting one of the biggest music mysteries of the 20th century, and immortalizing this composition as Albinoni’s Adagio.
Rhapsody on the Theme of Albinoni for violin, cello, piano and string orchestra is based on the Albinoni/Giazotto work. It is an original composition, not a music arrangement.
Music arrangement involves taking an existing piece of music and adapting it in various ways while maintaining its essence or thematic elements.
What makes music based on another composition to be recognized as original is that while the composer builds it using mostly his own creative elements in the new work, he combines it with music materials by other composers.
Since 12th century, the date of the earliest writings of music, history of music saw many examples of composers creating their work based on the compositions of others. For instance, J.S. Bach composed based on themes of Vivaldi, Igor Stravinsky based on themes of Giovanni Pergolesi, France Liszt based on themes of Giuseppe Verdi, Sergei Rachmaninoff based on a theme of Paganini. This list can goes on and on.
Like the famous Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Goldstein’s Rhapsody also takes the form of variations, but he set out an additional challenge for himself as a composer. Goldstein created each variation with a zest of classical composers, like Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi and others, adding a spice of jazzy and contemporary styles. Sometimes, it’s barely traceable, but in some cases, you will immediately catch it. Besides variations the Rhapsody has an Introduction and Coda.
Alexander Goldstein wrote two more original compositions based on Adagio by Albinoni. The first time, it was written for the Canadian ice dancers Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz’s Free Dance. Its original music and arrangement parts were created by Goldstein. Bourne-Kraatz won 2003 World Championship Gold skating to it.
